NEW YORK BLOG

This Blog documents my time in New York. My favourite places food and fashion! It works backwards but it makes no difference as you can start anywhere you want in New York depending on what area suits you most.

Enjoy!

New York Randoms

Here are some of my Favourite images from my trip! Including a memorial for 9/11, Some clever advertising paintings, a stamp shop and a great graphic printing shop.

FIT

We took a visit to The Fashion Institute of Technology to look at the exhibition and walk around the campus. They had a Daphne Guinness exhibition on which was incredible. Her outfits were mind blowing and the shoes even more so. Obviously I couldn't get photos of the exhibition but inside they had projections and videos showing her work and her inspirations and a number of impeccably dressed mannequins!(I have and opportunity to study here in my second year...I WANT TO GO!!!)

VINTAGE

Whilst in the Meat Packing District we found a quirky vintage shop. Inside was an Aladdin's cave of sequinned jackets, dresses and rows and rows of cowboy boots! I didn't get to buy anything but the store was a great find, I love being able to rummage around in a shop to find a bargain!

Chelsea Market

Wandering around by the High line we came across Chelsea Market. inside was a selection of quirky shops, restaurants and market places. It wasn't really on show so i'm really glad we found it. Amazing and healthy food which was great to find in NY.

Love Padlocks

Whilst in New York we walked along the Brooklyn Bridge and I noticed all of these padlocks attached to fixtures and benches on the bridge. I researched it once I was home and it's a pop cultural phenomenon! Couples write their names on the padlocks and attach them to railings all over the world to show their strong commitment to each other. It's been seen in Germany, Italy and Russia and now its taking over the states! I just love the photos I was able to take, there is something really personal about them which makes them so interesting.

The Brooklyn Bridge

We visited the Brooklyn Bridge late in afternoon as the sun was coming down. We didn't walk all the way across but the view of the city was amazing. The sun peeping through the skyline was amazing and I managed to capture some really great photos.

The High Line

One of my highlights was the High line that went over the top of the Meat Packing District. We walked over it just as the sun was coming down and I managed to get some great pictures. It was so nice to look at the hustle and bustle going down below it was such a contrast to the relaxed environment of the High Line. A definite must see.

Lower Midtown

One of our favourite places we went to was Lower Midtown. It's so open and airy and the weather couldn't have been better. The Flatiron building was so interesting to look at and brings a real 'quirkiness' to the area which I really liked. The stores around this area were really unique and edgy but quite expensive. The store windows were really different and i especially liked the graphics in a few of the stores. Wish I had more money...

Well I am a Fashion Student!...5th Avenue.

I took a real interest in the window displays in New York. Especially the difference between the representation of shops in different areas of NY. On 5th Avenue the store windows and front were very grand. High Street stores like Forever 21 were made to look very expensive from the outside with pillars and flags out the front. I caught on to a series of patterns in window displays. A lot of brands were creating a home like 'feel' by using picture frames and chairs. Another pattern was with the use of cardboard; Cardboard boxes and corrugated card were used a lot throughout stores when it came to advertising SALES. Technology was being used in a lot of store windows as well to grab the consumers attention as they walk past. Guess had videos playing of photo shoots and Uni-glo used bright lighting and micro tiles to advertise their sales. It was really interesting to walk down 5th Avenue and see the extravagance of the store windows and the variety between them.
